Milking

The goats are milked twice a day, everyday.
Milking times are 6 am and 5 pm.

The milking parlor is an efficient and animal friendly
room, with lots of natural light and air flow.

Each goat produces about
1 gallon of milk per day.
Milk production is a truly amazing process, with
the complex setup of secretory cells,
blood vessels, ducts and muscles.
400 gallons of blood flows through a
goat’s udder to produce 1 gallon of milk.

WOW!!! These critters are amazing!

The milk is piped directly through a filter,
chilled to 38 degrees F. and stored or used
that day for cheese making.
Cheese is made strictly from our goats milk.
Come visit Crystal Brook Farm to meet the goats.
You are welcome to come anytime on your own or plan a tour.

  • Wow – Summer is HERE!

Yep! That 100 inches of winter snow is a distant memory! Days are now full of bright sunshine and cool dips in pond, lakes, pools and the ocean. I'm happy to have the farm pond but 50 feet from my back door. Yes, there are snapping turtles and water snakes - but NO SHARKS! so I'm safe. Goats are working the summer pastures - grasses are maturing, variety of plants is changing, and the goats enjoy the shade trees and coolness of the dirt mound during the noon time hours. Everyone has kidded! We hit 123 kids born this year. Pretty even spread between females and males. One of the best kidding season to date, with strong healthy kids born, and very few problems with the does during birthing. Kidding box is back upstairs - a celebrated event for me! BIG NEWS!! The book that consumed my 2014 has been released! "DAIRY GOAT HANDBOOK - for Backyard, Homestead and Small Farm" was a labor of .. well..love! Thanks to all who helped encourage, inform, edit and review!! I will be selling copies at farmers markets, our on-farm store, and other local venues. You can order through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Search with the title and Ann Starbard. I dropped some of our farmers markets - just too much after 17 years. We are at Copley Sq.on Fridays only, Newton - Cold Spring Park - Tuesday, Westborough - Thursday, Sterling - Friday, and Marblehead - Saturday. Thank you to all our loyal customers in Amherst and Arlington. WE MISS YOU.. and the markets. Difficult decisions - we hope you find us at another market, a retail location near you.. or better yet, plan to trip to Crystal Brook Farm - and visit us!
